What to expect

How a minor oral surgery (wisdom teeth)
appointment runs.

We keep things calm and unhurried. Here's the rhythm you can expect from start to finish, no surprises.

  1. Planning

We start with x-rays so we can see exactly what we're dealing with. We talk through risks, recovery time and what to expect on the day before any treatment is booked.

  2. Day of surgery

Full local anaesthetic numbing on the day. You arrive, the procedure runs, and you leave the same day.

  3. The procedure

Depends on the case, surgical wisdom-tooth removal or other minor surgical work. We work carefully and efficiently. Most procedures take 30 to 90 minutes.

  4. Recovery

You'll go home with painkillers, a saltwater rinse routine, and clear instructions on swelling, bleeding and food. Most people are back to work within 2 to 3 days; full healing takes 1 to 2 weeks.

Common questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't see your question? Call us on (02) 9570 4044 and we'll happily talk it through.

How much swelling and bruising should I expect?

Some swelling for 2 to 3 days is normal, especially after wisdom teeth. Ice packs on the face and sleeping with your head slightly elevated help. Bruising can appear on day 2 to 3 and usually fades over a week.

When can I drive?

Same day, you'll only have had local anaesthetic so you're safe to drive yourself home.

Are stitches removed?

Most stitches we use dissolve on their own over 1 to 2 weeks. If we use non-dissolving stitches, we'll book you in for a quick removal visit.

How do I know it's healing properly?

Pain that's improving day by day, swelling that peaks at 48 to 72 hours then fades, no foul taste or worsening pain after day 4. If anything feels worse, not better, call us.

Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. Some wisdom teeth come through normally and never cause problems. We assess each tooth individually rather than recommending blanket removal.
