What to expect

How a night guards
appointment runs.

We keep things calm and unhurried. Here's the rhythm you can expect from start to finish, no surprises.

  1. Assessment

We look for the tell-tale signs of grinding, flat wear facets on your back teeth, scalloped tongue edges, masseter muscle tenderness. We check your bite carefully.

  2. Impressions or scan

Quick, about 15 minutes. Digital scan if you prefer; traditional impressions if it's a better fit for your case.

  3. Fabrication & fitting

Made in the dental lab to your exact bite. About a week later we fit it, check it sits comfortably, and adjust if needed.

  4. Wear & review

You wear it nightly. Most people adapt within 1 to 2 weeks. We review at your next check-up to make sure it's still fitting well and your symptoms have settled.

What's included

Every appointment, in full.

  • Assessment of your bite and any signs of wear
  • Discussion of grinding triggers (stress, sleep, bite)
  • Custom impressions or digital scan
  • Lab-made splint in the right thickness for your case
  • Fitting visit with bite adjustment
  • Care and storage advice
  • Annual review at your check-up

Why it matters

Long-term grinding wears teeth down, can cause sensitivity, headaches, and broken restorations. A night guard is a small investment that protects a lifetime of dental work.

Common questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't see your question? Call us on (02) 9570 4044 and we'll happily talk it through.

Will I be able to sleep with it in?

Most patients adapt within a few nights. Some take a week or two. Modern splints are surprisingly thin and most people forget they're wearing it once they're used to it.

How is it different from a sports mouthguard?

Sports guards are thick and shock-absorbing. Night guards are thinner, made of a more rigid material, and designed for prolonged wear without affecting your bite. Different jobs.

Will it stop me grinding?

It doesn't stop the habit, but it absorbs the force so your teeth, muscles and jaw joint don't take the brunt. Many patients also find their morning headaches and jaw soreness improve.

Should I wear it every night?

Yes, once we've made one for you, consistent nightly wear is what protects your teeth. Skipping nights here and there reduces the benefit.

How long do they last?

Three to five years on average, depending on how heavily you grind. Heavy grinders may need replacement sooner. Bring it to your check-ups and we'll keep an eye on it.

How do I clean it?

Rinse after each use, brush gently with cool water (no toothpaste, too abrasive), and soak weekly in a denture-cleaning tablet. Air dry, don't lock in a sealed container.
