Gentle dental treatment at Dora Street Dental

Sometimes a tooth is beyond repair, extensive decay, a deep fracture, or impacted wisdom teeth. We make extraction as gentle and straightforward as possible, with clear aftercare and replacement options if needed.

What to expect

How a tooth extraction
appointment runs.

We keep things calm and unhurried. Here's the rhythm you can expect from start to finish, no surprises.

  1. Assessment

We confirm the tooth genuinely can't be saved (or that extraction is the best option) with x-rays and a careful look. If there's a chance to save it, we'll talk you through that first.

  2. Numbing

Full local anaesthetic. You'll feel pressure during the extraction but nothing sharp. We give the anaesthetic plenty of time to work.

  3. The extraction

We rock the tooth gently to widen the socket, then lift it out. Surgical extractions (where part of the tooth is below the gum) involve a small incision and may need stitches.

  4. Aftercare

We pack the socket with gauze, talk you through what to expect over the next 48 hours, and confirm your replacement plan if you're having one.

What's included

Every appointment, in full.

  • Pre-extraction x-rays
  • Discussion of replacement options (implant, bridge, denture, or leaving as-is)
  • Local anaesthetic, full numbing before any work
  • Gentle removal technique
  • Post-extraction socket care and gauze
  • Written aftercare instructions
  • Follow-up review where indicated

Common questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't see your question? Call us on (02) 9570 4044 and we'll happily talk it through.

Will the extraction hurt?

Not during, local anaesthetic takes care of that. After the numbness wears off you'll feel some discomfort for a day or two, manageable with paracetamol or ibuprofen. We give you written aftercare so you know what's normal.

How long does the socket take to heal?

The gum closes over within 2 to 3 weeks. Underneath, bone remodelling continues for several months. If you're planning an implant, we'll factor that into the timeline.

What can I eat afterwards?

Stick to soft, lukewarm foods on day one. Avoid anything hot, hard, crunchy or chewy on the extraction side for 3 to 4 days. No straws, the suction can dislodge the clot, and no smoking, both of which raise the risk of dry socket.

What's dry socket?

When the blood clot in the healing socket is lost too early, exposing bone. It's painful but treatable, call us and we'll see you the same day if we suspect it.

Should I replace the tooth?

Depends on which tooth, your bite, and what matters to you. Front teeth almost always, for appearance and function. Back teeth often, to maintain chewing balance. We'll talk through implant, bridge and denture options so you can decide.

Will I need antibiotics?

Most extractions don't need antibiotics. We prescribe them when there's an active infection or a medically complex situation, in line with current Australian antibiotic-stewardship guidelines.
